No is exempt from acid reflux. As many as one-third of people are affected by it. Since it is so common, it is a bit surprising that many people don’t do what to do when it comes to acid reflux. Use the tips below to fight acid reflux effectively.

Stop eating for a period of three hours or more before going to sleep. The upright position will force acids to make their way to your stomach. When laying down, the acid may climb back up. Therefore, it is best to give yourself a few hours before you go to sleep.

You are much less likely to have acid reflux if you are at your ideal weight. If you are overweight, your sphincter will allow acid into your esophagus. Losing weight prevents the sphincter from opening, thereby confining stomach acid to your stomach.

Pregnant women often start developing acid reflux. The baby’s growth tends to crowd the contents of the stomach, forcing acid into the esophagus. Refrain from eating foods that have a high acid content. If this is not helping, look for teas that are available which help calm the esophagus while keeping the stomach acids at bay. This will not hurt the baby.

Get in shape to reduce acid reflux. One of the main causes of acid reflux is obesity. Losing around 10% of your current body weight can lessen your acid reflux symptoms greatly. Lose weight by eating several smaller meals. Avoid crash dieting.

Don’t lie down after eating. When you recline, your digestion slows down. This upright position can help the flow of liquids in your body.

Try eating slowly. Don’t gorge, take your time. Instead of eating too fast, slow down and chew your food at a more relaxed pace. Eating too much or too quickly can worsen symptoms. You can try setting your fork down between bites to slow yourself down.

Light to moderate daily exercise is very helpful in getting acid reflux under control. Don’t overdo it! Try not to exercise rigorously, as this can actually exacerbate your symptoms. Such exercises work to keep you in an upright position, allowing gravity to aid digestion. Finally, exercise can help you shed some pounds. A healthy body weight is another great way to relieve your acid reflux.

Try relaxing. Eating meals while you are stressed can cause you to experience lots of heartburn and acid build-up When you are finished with your meal, do some relaxation exercises, like meditation or deep breathing. Never lay down or recline immediately after a meal.

Do not go to bed until three hours after your last meal. For instance, if you hit the sack at 11, you should be eating your last meal before 8. The reason being that lying down on a full stomach puts extra pressure on the LES muscle. When you do that, you’ll have acid reflux flare ups.

Eating some of your favorite foods can be problematic if you have acid reflux. Cut the acidity of the tomato based sauce by putting in a small amount of sugar as you cook. The sauce will be sweeter, making it easier to consume.

An excellent method of reducing your acid reflux symptoms is consuming your meals as slowly as possible. After you have taken a few bites of food, put down your fork or spoon and rest so that your stomach can properly digest. Take some time to enjoy your food. Also, don’t over stuff yourself.

As was stated before, a lot of people today suffer from acid reflux. Don’t give in to reflux, fight it instead. Apply what you’ve just learned, and get on with your pain-free life.
