Taking care of your eyes is not something that many people think about regularly. They’re concerned with work and their family and hobbies, but their eyes don’t become a worry until it is too late. Read the following article to keep this from happening to you.

If eye problems seem to run in your family, visit an eyecare professional. Hereditary or genetic eye issues can be treated and early intervention can prevent them from causing severe irreparable damage. Early detection can end up being your best defense.

You have to realize that there are many types of sunglasses, and some will not protect your eyes as much as others. The ones you wear should completely block all UVA and UVB sun rays. Even if you are choosing glasses as a fashion statement, understand that some cheaply made sunglasses can even negatively impact your vision.

You can actually prevent many eye problems with proper care. Studies show that eating foods rich in Vitamins E and C, omega-3 fats and zinc often prevents macular degeneration and cataracts, along with other eye maladies. Salmon, tuna, nuts, beans, green leafy vegetables, and oranges are just a few of the foods that have these helpful nutrients.

If you are a smoker, consider quitting. Although you probably are aware of the lung damage you are causing, your poor eyes are being affected too. People who have been smoking for a long time are at higher risk to develop eye disease. If you quit now, you cut down your risk of getting nerve damage or cataracts.

You have to be sure you’re not dealing with eye diseases that your family has. Many eye conditions are hereditary, so let your doctor know so you can determine your risks. Speak with older family members to know about any history with eye problems.

Improve your eye health with omega-3 fatty acids. It’s a great idea to eat foods that have omega-3 fatty acids in them. Foods such as tuna, halibut, salmon and leafy, green vegetables are great suggestions. Eat a serving of one or the other daily.

Quality sunglasses can go a long way. This helps keep the UV rays from harming your eyes when out in the sun. Select sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVB and UVA rays. If you’re frequently driving, you may want polarized lenses. They decrease glare. Even if your contacts offer UV protection, sunglasses are still recommended.

Now that you know a few things about taking care of your eyes, get moving! Apply what you have learned here to maximize the chance for good eye health throughout your life. Your eyes will thank you when you make your habits healthier.
